Makes Headway in Integrating Intellectual Property into European and Global
Economies
Belarus is
making a feasible step forwards integrating its intellectual property into the
European and global economies, Prime Minister of Belarus Sergei Sidorskiy
declared on January 31, 2007 during his meeting with Director General of the
World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Kamil Idris in Minsk.
As the Prime
Minister noted, Belarus in partnership with WIPO has been implementing an
intellectual property program and memorandum. The Government of Belarus has
passed more than 36 international agreements in the area of innovation, sci-tech
development and research. “We assign primary importance to these issues,” Sergei
Sidorskiy underlined.
He stated that
Belarus has an intellectual property training center which has provided training
to more than 7,000 specialists so far. Sergei Sidorskiy thanked Kamil Idris for
WIPO assistance in setting up the center.
He also
highlighted the importance of the state program of innovation development. In
line with the document, Belarus will set up more than 100 new companies, 80
cutting-edge technologies and manufactures by 2010. Nowadays, Belarus revamps up
to 30 percent of production facilities a year. By 2010 the annual innovation
modernization will be at the level of 19 percent. “Innovation technologies are
the top priority of Belarusian economy,” the head of the Government stressed.
In turn, Kamil
Idris noted that “the purpose of his visit to Belarus is to share the best
developments in the intellectual property sphere”. The foreign guest informed
that this is his second visit to Belarus. His first visit was in 2003. According
to him, Belarus’ intellectual property “is on a proper level”. WIPO will promote
development of the intellectual property infrastructure in Belarus with a view
to supporting the country’s economic growth, the WIPO director general said.
Prime Minister
of Belarus Sergei Sidorskiy and Director General of the WIPO Kamil Idris signed
a joint declaration on strengthening the intellectual property system and on
promoting innovations in the Republic of Belarus.
When commenting
upon the document Sergei Sidorskiy told reporters: “We have been building up
those relations between Belarus and the WIPO and have been setting out concrete
intellectual development prospects. We have agreed that the World Intellectual
Property Organization will promote cooperation with our specialists in
intellectual property protection. It concerns an international audit in order to
assess effectiveness of the intellectual property system in Belarus. Belarusian
specialists will also take the WIPO training courses. All this will promote
Belarus’ integration into the world intellectual property system”, the Prime
Minister underlined.
Belarus became
a WIPO member on April 26, 1970.
